2016 Books to READ (part 2)

One of the best things about getting published is getting to read lots of books by other debut authors. I'm nothing if not a bookivore. If I could, I'd read from sun up till sun down. (It's a good thing my husband doesn't read this blog. He'd probably snort and snark out, "you already do.")

This list is the start of the books I love most. Since I'm excited about a lot of the debut books coming out this year, there will be follow up posts. Yes, my book is one of them, but I'll resist and leave it off the list. (But you can check out EVER THE HUNTED on GOODREADS and add it to your WANT TO READ list...just saying.)

Disclaimer: Since all these books sucked me in so much that I failed to clean house and cook dinner, I've decided not to rank them. I love them all equally. Like candy and my children.

1. BLACKHEARTS - This book will hook you. (See what I did there?) I dub this book the romantic life of a pirate before he was a pirate.

Blackhearts by www.summerillphotography.com

GOODREADS: Blackbeard the pirate was known for striking fear in the hearts of the bravest of sailors. But once he was just a young man who dreamed of leaving his rigid life behind to chase adventure in faraway lands. Nothing could stop him—until he met the one girl who would change everything.

Edward "Teach" Drummond, son of one of Bristol's richest merchants, has just returned from a year-long journey on the high seas to find his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, Teach dreams only of returning to the vast ocean he’d begun to call home. There's just one problem: convincing his father to let him leave and never come back.

Following her parents' deaths, Anne Barrett is left penniless and soon to be homeless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks, and Anne longs for escape. How will she ever realize her dream of sailing to Curaçao—where her mother was born—when she's stuck in England?

From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn to each other, they’re trapped by society and their own circumstances. Faced with an impossible choice, they must decide to chase their dreams and go, or follow their hearts and stay.

2. THE READER - Curious girl saves wild, dangerous boy in a world where books are power. Swoon!

The Reader by www.summerillphotography.com

GOODREADS: Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.

3. ASSASSIN'S HEART - Assassin girl loves a dangerous boy, until she vows to kill him. Oh my!

Assassin's Heart by www.summerillphotography.com

GOODREADS: In the kingdom of Lovero, nine rival Families of assassins lawfully kill people for a price. As a highly skilled member of one of these powerful clans, seventeen-year-old Lea Saldana has always trusted in the strength of her Family. Until she awakens to find them murdered and her home in flames. The Da Vias, the Saldanas’ biggest enemy, must be responsible—and Lea should have seen it coming. But her secret relationship with the Da Vias’ son, Val, has clouded her otherwise killer instinct—and given the Da Vias more reason than ever to take her Family down.

Racked with guilt and shattered over Val’s probable betrayal, Lea sets out to even the score, with her heart set on retaliation and only one thought clear in her mind: make the Da Vias pay.

With shades of The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, this richly imagined fantasy from debut author Sarah Ahiers is a story of love, lies, and the ultimate vengeance.

Now go forth and read!
